Herb's Description

Lallemantia royleana Benth.. Herbs annual. Stems 15-20.5 cm, densely spreading or retrorse white pubescent. Petiole 5-10 mm; leaf blade ovate, 1.5-2.5 × 0.8-1 cm, sparsely pubescent, base cuneate, margin crenate, apex obtuse. Verticillasters in terminal spikes 2-18.5 cm; floral leaves short petiolate, ovate to oblong-cuneate, 0.8-1.7 cm × 5-7 mm, margin remotely crenate to 1- or 2-aristate-crenate; bracts obovate-cuneate, 4-7 × 2-5 mm, abaxially yellow glandular, margin 2-4-toothed, aristae 2-6 mm. Calyx tubular, 5 × 1-1.2 mm, spreading pubescent, puberulent, sometimes intermixed with yellow glands, veins conspicuous. Corolla purple-blue, slightly exserted, 5.5 mm, white pilose; upper lip 0.7 mm, slightly concave, 2-lobed, arcuate pleated along margin; middle lobe of lower lip reniform, 1.2 × 2.8 mm, emarginate, margin undulate; lateral lobes minute, circular. Nutlets dark brown, narrowly oblong, adaxially ribbed, 2.3 × 1 mm, glabrous.

Occurence: It occurs in Caucasus region, East to W China, Middle Asia, Near and Middle East countries.. Cultivated in the Punjab as medicinal plant for the mucilaginous seeds, which are prepared to cooling beverages and poultices.
